  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper

  • ¼ teaspoon thyme
  • ¼ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder

  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  • Cut the bread into 1-inch cubes.
  • Preheat the air fryer to 400 F (200 C).
  • Measure the aquafaba or vegetable broth or mix the balsamic and mustard (depending on which you are using. In a small dish, combine the spices that match the wet ingredient.

  • After the air fryer is hot, add the croutons in a single layer with space between the cubes.
  • Air fry for 2 minutes. Shake the croutons and air fry for another 1-2 minutes until the croutons are crisp and golden brown.

How to bake croutons

  • Preheat the oven to 375 F (190 C).
  • After seasoning the croutons, place them on a baking tray and separate them into a single layer.
  • Bake for 15-20 minutes, tossing them halfway through.

Notes

  • Nutritional information and servings based on ½ a cup of croutons.
  • Crusty, flavorful bread like whole grain sourdough or French bread, or Italian bread, makes the best croutons. Softer breads need less moisture, so reduce the wet ingredients. Avoid letting the bread get soggy, especially if you use vegetable broth.
  • Store croutons in an airtight container at room temperature for 2-3 days. Reheat them in the air fryer for 1 minute or oven for a few minutes. Toss them frequently so they don't burn.
  • The seasonings in this post are a guideline. Use any combination of herbs and spices or your favorite seasonings and blends. Change them up depending on what you'll serve them with. Try nutritional yeast for a cheesy flavor or make black pepper croutons with coarse black pepper and salt.
